2011 Fixing Probe
Spot-fixing and match-fixing are the utmost crime
that exists in Cricket. Fixing is changing the outcomes of the match using
money or any other materialized possession. Usually, a match is fixed by
offering a player to underperform. The task of match-fixing is performed by
professionals who are known as bookies. Another news regarding fixing in
cricket has turned up from time to time. This time it is about the
World Cup final of 2011 which was held at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
The allegation that the final was fixed has been
imposed many times. Few Srilankan high prolific identities have claimed that
the Indian win was fixed. The World Cup 1996 winning captain - Arjuna Ranatunga
has made statements that 2011 final was fixed and he seeks probe. In 2017, Ranatunga
posted a video on his Facebook page. He said that he was commenting during
that match. He further added that he had doubts and was distressed about the
incident.
Currently, the controversy has turned up again. Mahindanada Aluthgamage, then the sports minister of Srilanka has said that the outcome of the match was manipulated. He has pointed out many things that occurred during the match and then asked ICC to dig into the matter.
He has also asked questions to the concerned authorities. Questions like, “Why the coin was tossed twice in the final, why was the team combination changed, why Suraj Randiv was flown from Srilanka and drafted directly into playing eleven”. He has accused Arvinda de Silva, who was the chief selector then saying that he was the main culprit.
Aluthgamage has also said that no player was involved in the act. The minister has also asked why four of the main Srilankan players were rested for the finals. He also submitted six pages long report to the sports ministry.
Aluthgamage is now the Deputy Minister of Power and Energy of Srilanka and he was the Sports Minister from 2010 to 2015. Some known names have criticized him by saying, why is he raising such allegations after a long period of 9 years. Some have also said that this might a political move as the general elections in Srilanka is round the corner. Some former players have stood up and said they have played that match with loyalty to the game and their country.
Kumar Sangakkara, the Srilanka Captian in the World Cup 2011 has said the minister should public the proofs.
Mahela Jayawardene who
scored a blistering century in the finals also rubbishes the allegations.
After all his allegations and the report that he submitted. Srilankan police was assigned to dig into the matter and some members of the World
Cup squad and the team management were questioned. After the inquiry, the CBI
in their report stated that all the allegations are false and the match was not
fixed.
