Nepotism in Cricket!

After the unfortunate incident of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, every fan is questioning. Everybody on social media is questioning the celebrities. Celebrities across all fields are being criticized. Fans are asking whether Nepotism is present in Sports or not?

Former player and commentator Aakash Chopra has also commented to the topic of Nepotism in Cricket and said some Board Administrators make their lads play at the state level with sheer use of power

There have been examples of cricketers’ offspring playing the sport as well. There have been many such examples in Indian cricket. Amarnaths, Manjrekars, Gavaskars, Binnys, Pataudis, Tendulkars, and Dravids are prime examples. But does nepotism really help in Cricket?

Stats and records really do speak for themselves.

Lala Amarnath was the first Indian test centurion, two his sons Mohinder & Surender played for India but only the former got more success.

Vijay Majrekar was regarded as one of best batsman which India has ever produced. His son Sanjay was an ordinary batsman compared to his father. Thus, he didn't play for India much.

Sunil Gavaskar, the first batsman on Earth to score 10K test runs. His son Rohan only has 11 ODIs under his name, he had to struggle and shift to Bengal just to play first-class cricket.

Roger Binny who was the leading wicket-taker in 1983 WC, his son Stuart who had an unbelievable debut had faded away after some ordinary performances.

The 8th Nawab of Pataudi and also the former captain of the Indian cricket team, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi. His son Mansoor raised all ranks, he was one of the greatest batsmen and also led India. He played all his international cricket only with one eye.

Yuvraj Singh, the all-rounder who was the key player for India in 2007 T20 WC and 2011 WC. His father was a talented bowler who couldn’t play much.

Currently, the talk of the town is Arjun Tendulkar and Samit Dravid. Both of them are currently playing under age cricket and often called products of Nepotism. With the day and age of social media, criticism has become more direct. These kids are already under a lot of pressure. But in the sports, the criticism makes the player stronger and hopefully, these players will turn their talent into delivery and make India proud like their fathers did.

Nepotism can be everywhere but in sports, there is only one thing that can help at the highest level which is Talent!
